Endocrinology Unit

Fertility is regulated by the endocrine system and many of the alterations are due to endocrine malfunctions. The same occurs with the development of a pregnancy, which may be affected by endocrine or metabolic problems.
Endocrine or metabolic illnesses are currently the most common, and they can be prevented and treated with healthy diets. This is why our Unit pays special attention to nutrition.

The effects of endocrine and metabolic illnesses

1.- Alterations in fertility:

- Menstrual irregularities and ovulation disorders.
- Abortions. Between 10 and 23% are due to endocrine malfunctions.

2.- Problems in the development of the gestation:

- Gestational diabetes. Up to 10% of pregnant women can contract this.
- A rise in the rate of abortions and congenital malformations.
Fortunately, most endocrine disorders are reversible or can be suitably treated to restore fertility and reduce the complications associated with pregnancy.

3.- Different pathologies:

Thyroids, diabetes, high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, malnutrition due to alterations in eating habits, etc, imply greater cardiovascular risk and higher mortality.
These pathologies are often due to unhealthy lifestyles such as an excess of calories, a sedentary lifestyle, etc.
